If you’re new to the game of lacrosse and watching from the stands, it can be a terribly confusing game.
The top 3 things you need to know about being a lacrosse spectator:
- NEVER yell at the officials. They can give you a penalty and hurt your team. It is in the rules that nobody can speak to the officials except for the scoring table crew and the head coach.
- Don’t assume you know why a player has gone off the field. They are allowed to take themselves out. There are also different formations for different plays. It usually isn’t a punishment to be taken out of the game.
- One nasty comment overheard by a parent or player from the other team reflects on your entire program. The only way to have a positive reputation is to never allow yourself to cross over to the other side. Cheer for great plays, no matter whose team made it.
Here are a few things you can do to increase your own Lax IQ:
- Get involved! Volunteer to work at the scoring table as the statistician, timer, or spotter
- Check out the Laxicon to decipher lacrosse slang (word usage varies greatly by region)
- Read the US Lacrosse Nationwide Parents Guide
